They are specialty trained highly skilled nurses that work with doctors and technicians to perform cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties and valvuloplasties. These patients are considered stable but acutely ill, usually coming from a step down or ICU inpatient setting. An LTAC nurse possesses critical thinking skills and has extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to treat a variety of traumatic and or disease processes. LTAC nurses work closely with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate and oversee wound care, ventilator care, rehab, occupational therapy, physical therapy and nutrition. LTAC nurse dispense medications, they are responsible for chest tubes, ventilators, wound vacs, critical care IV Drips, enteral nutrition, feeding tubes, central lines etc. They also supervise care given by the nurses’ aides and provide emotional support of the patient and family. LTAC nurse is equivalent to a step down nurse in a hospital.
